Women's Golf Struggles In First Round Of NCAA Women's Golf Championships Lobos in 24th place; Ferrini Leads Lobos Individually

Howey-in-the-Hills, Fla. -- The University of New Mexico women's golf team sits in last place after the first round of the 2001 NCAA Women's Golf Championships being held in Howey-in-the-Hills, Fla. The tournament runs May 22-25 and is being played at El Campeon Golf Course at the Mission Inn Golf and Tennis Resort which is co-host with Stetson University.
New Mexico struggled early today and carded a first round 318 (+30) to place 24th. Junior Claudia Ferrini leads the Lobos individually shooting a first round 76 (+4) which ties her for 46th. Freshman Kristi Larsen is tied for 93rd with an 80 followed by seniors Elisa Kase and Ryley Webb who are tied for 107th with 81s. Freshman Kellyn Newman shot an 83 and is tied for 116th place.
"We had a tough day," said head coach Jackie Booth. "We understand where we are and what we have to do. The team is ready to challenge themselves to improve. We still have the opportunity to do that. It will show us what we're made of."
Second round action begins at 7:30 a.m. (EDT) tomorrow on El Campeon. Live tournament updates are available on a round-by-round basis at www.golfstat.com through the final round scheduled for Friday.
