UNM Places 10th at NCAA West Regional Larsen qualifies for Nationals.

Stanford, Calif. - The University of New Mexico women¹s golf team completed one of their most successful seasons in the history of the program at the 2002 NCAA Women¹s Golf West Regional today in Stanford, Calif. The Lobos carded a final round 306 to finish with a tournament total 915 thereby placing 10th in the 21 team field. Only the top eight teams advanced to the NCAA Women¹s Golf Championships. Individually for New Mexico sophomore Kristi Larsen placed tied for eighth with a tournament score of 228. Because of her finish Larsen qualified for nationals as an individual. The top-three individuals not affiliated with qualifying teams receive at-large invitations for the 2002 NCAA Women¹s Golf Championships to be held May 21-24 in Seattle, Wash. The University of Washington will host the event. Freshman Kailin Downs finished with a tournament score of 228 (+12) while senior Claudia Ferrini completed her collegiate career with a 233 (+17). Freshman Shannon Johnson capped off her rookie season with a 237 (+21) while sophomore Katrina Leckovic finished with a 238 (+22).
The Lobos captured a school record three-tournament titles this season
including the 2001 Dick McGuire Invitational, the 2001 Hawai'i Fall Golf
Classic, and the 2002 Mountain West Conference Championships. Freshman
Downs captured MWC Freshman and Player of the Year honors while head coach
Jackie Booth captured her second straight MWC Coach of the Year honors.
New Mexico placed four members, Downs, Larsen, Ferrini and Leckovic on the
All-MWC team.
