ST. GEORGE, Utah --- The 19th-ranked New Mexico women's golf team shot a 14-over par 298 in the opening round of the NCAA West Regional and currently sit in seventh place. The Lobos carded nine birdies at the par 71, 6,234 yard Entrada at Snow Canyon Golf Course. Freshman Jodi Ewart shot an even par 71 in the first round and enters day two three shots back of the individual leader.

Ewart, who won the Mountain West Conference Championship on the same course three weeks prior, had the best round for UNM and is tied for sixth place. Ewart had two birdies in the round and remains in the hunt for the individual title heading into Friday's action.

Sophomore Py Bengtsson is tied for 34th after shooting a 4-over par 75, while juniors Alexandra Phelps and Giselle Claux are tied for 40th at 5-over par 76. Sophomore Mikaela Backstedt shot an 8-over par 79 and enters the second round tied for 70th.

Stanford leads the 21 team event after shooting a 3-over par 287. BYU and Oklahoma State at tied for second at 7-over par 291. Pepperdine is fourth at 8-over par and Arizona State is in fifth at 10-over.

OSU's Pernilla Lindberg leads the event at 3-under par 68, while Stanford's Jennifer Tangtiphaiboontana is second at 2-under par 69. Three individuals shot 1-under and are tied for third.
