New Mexico Sits in Fifth Place Following First Round Lobo sophomore Larsen scores hole in one.

STANFORD, Calif. - The University of New Mexico women's golf team currently sits in fifth place at the 2002 NCAA Division I Women's Golf West Regional being held in Stanford, Calif. The Lobos carded a first round 302. Leading the tournament is Pepperdine with a 289. Rounding out the top five include (score): UCLA (296), California (297), and Arizona (299). Individually for New Mexico sophomore Kristi Larsen scored a hole in one on the par-3 155 yard 17th hole using an six iron. "I didn't see it go in," stated an ecstatic Larsen. "I saw it hit the green but didn't react until I heard everyone clapping and yelling." Larsen is currently tied with Arizona's Lorena Ochoa for second place with a 2-under 70. Leading the tournament is Pepperdine's Katherine Hull who is one shot ahead of Larsen and Ochoa with a 69 (-3). "I want to play consistent tomorrow," said Larsen. "I was up and down today but am looking forward to the next two rounds." Senior Claudia Ferrini shot a first round 75 (+3), while freshman Kailin Downs carded a 77 (+5). Freshman Shannon Johnson shot an 80 (+8) with sophomore Katrina Leckovic rounding out the squad with an 81 (+9). "I think we're in position," said head coach Jackie Booth. "We didn't play our best but we made every shot count and never gave up. The team played well on the back nine and we're looking forward to the next two days and proving what kind of team we are."
The second round begins at 8:30 (MT) tomorrow morning at the Stanford Golf Course which plays to a par 72 on 6,168 yards. There are 21 teams competing for eight spots who will advance to the 2002 NCAA Women's Golf Championtships scheduled for May 21-24 in Auburn, Wash. The University of Washington will host the event.
