LUBBOCK, Texas -- A day after shooting the best single round in school history at a regional championship, the 14th-ranked New Mexico women's golf team struggled in the second round of the NCAA Central Regional Championships Friday afternoon at the par 72, 6,328-yard Jerry S. Rawls Course at Texas Tech University.

The Lobos, who entered the day in a tie for second after shooting a 3-over 291 on Thursday, dropped to a tie for 16th with a 44-over 332 on Friday.

The course played extremely difficult with windy conditions, as the best team score was Baylor's 13-over 301. For the tournament, the Lobos - who need to finish in the top eight to advance to the NCAA Championships - are 291-332--623 (+47), 16 shots behind behind seventh place Texas and Michigan State.

The leaderboard is crowded at the top, as four teams are tied for first (Baylor, Texas A&M, Missour, Auburn) with a score of 603 (+27). Lisa Ferrero of Texas paces the individuals with a 1-under 143.

No Lobo shot under an 80 in the second round. Sophomore Ashley Rollins was the top finisher of the day, shooting an 8-over 80 to put her into a tie for 30th overall with a 72-80--152 (+8).

Junior Christine Fernandez, who entered the day tied for fourth, slipped to a tie for 42nd after carding an 11-over 83. For the tournament, Fernandez is 10-over at 154.

Senior Kailin Downs is in a tie for 57th with a 72-84--156 (+12), while senior Christina Spence is in a tie for 85th with a 76-85--161 (+17).

Freshman Giselle Claux is 23-over (78-89--167) after two rounds.

 

 

The third and final round of the NCAA Central Regional Championships will be held on Saturday. The top eight teams in the regional will advance to the NCAA Championships May 17-20 in Sunriver, Ore. Live stats will be available at www.GolfStat.com.
