SDSU Women's Golf Team Finishes Second At MWC Championship Three Aztecs place among top-seven individuals.
April 24, 2002
Sunriver, Ore. - The San Diego State women's golf team posted its third-straight sub-300 team total, firing a final-round 299 Wednesday. But it wasn't enough to hold off a hard-charging New Mexico squad as the 22nd-ranked Lobos tore up the Sunriver Resort's Meadows Golf Course with a tournament-low score of even-par 284 to overtake the Aztecs and claim the 2002 Mountain West Conference Women's Golf Championship. It is the third-straight league title for New Mexico, which completed the 54-hole tournament with a final team score of 882, 11 strokes ahead of the second-place Aztecs. San Diego State, which had three players place among the top-seven individuals, finished up at 893. Colorado State shot 898 to take third. "We made a good run at the title and it took a phenomenal final round by New Mexico to beat us," said assistant coach Felicia Brown. "We beat a lot of good teams and broke 300 every round which were two big goals of ours so I am very happy with how we played." Senior Heather Rollo shot a final-round 73 to pace the Aztecs and finished in a two-way tie for second at 5-over 218, just two stokes behind individual medalist Lynette Duran of Colorado State. Sophomore Shayna Miyajima, second heading into the final round, finished up with a 76 and tied for fourth with a final score of 7-over 220. Junior Jennifer Hoene rounded out SDSU's trio of top-7 finishers in seventh with a final score of 9-over 222 on the heels of her final-round 74. Senior Asa Jankler turned in her best round of the tournament, firing a 76 Wednesday to take 24th at 234. Sophomore Sandy Kim tied for 26th with a final score of 240. The San Diego State women's golf team next awaits word from the NCAA Tournament selection committee on a possible regional berth. The NCAA will name the 21 teams headed to each of three regionals on Monday, April 29th.
