April 23, 2001
LARAMIE, Wyo. -
Alison McGuire, a sophomore from Cheyenne, Wyo., fired the best round of her college career with a 77 on Monday in the first round of the 2001 Mountain West Conference Championship, and is tied for ninth place in the field of 25 competitors. Wyoming is in fifth place in the field of five MWC schools, with a score of 317. McGuire's previous low round as a collegian was 79. She is tied with five other golfers at four-over par 77 entering Tuesday's second round. New Mexico leads in the team competition with a team score of 293. Mayumi Motoyama of Colorado State, Elisa Kase of New Mexico and Ryley Webb, also of New Mexico, are tied for the individual lead at even par 71. "Alison (McGuire) played a great round today," said Wyoming women's golf coach Jill Johnson. "She shot 40 on the front nine, and closed with a 37 on the back nine. Tara Ludwig, another sophomore for us, also enjoyed a good round. Tara shot a 79. The other girls didn't hurt themselves today, but I know they want to come out and play better tomorrow. "We're in fifth, but we are only six strokes behind BYU, and we play in the same group with them tomorrow. If we can have a couple of other girls step up tomorrow, we should have a good chance to close that gap." The 2001 MWC Women's Golf Championship is being played on the Meadows Course at the Sunriver Resort in Sunriver, Ore. The course measures 5,851 yards and plays to a par of 71. The tournament format will be three 18-hole rounds, with all three rounds set to tee off at 10:00 a.m., Mountain time. The second round will be played on Tuesday, April 24 and the final round on Wednesday, April 25.
