April 10, 2001

LARAMIE, Wyo. -

Jessi Santesson, a University of Wyoming senior from Worland, Wyo., concluded the 2001 Brigham Young Dixie Classic in 27th place on Tuesday with a 54-hole total of 237, 21-over par. Santesson fired rounds of 80-78-79 to tie for 27th out of 104 competitors. The tournament was played at the Sunbrook Golf Course in St. George, Utah.

As a team, the Wyoming Cowgirls placed 17th in the field of 19 teams. UW shot a three-round total of 1008. San Francisco captured the team title with a 918 team total. The individual competition ended in a tie between Hanna-Riikka Kuitunen of Northern Arizona and Carrie Summerhays of BYU at 10-over par 226.

"Jessi (Santesson) had a great tournament," said Wyoming women's golf coach Jill Johnson. I'm thrilled to see her play so well after having a difficult tournament in Hawaii a couple of weeks ago. Jessi has been hampered with back problems throughout this season. I know she is very excited with performance this week, and this should give her a lot of confidence heading into the conference championship later this month.

"We had a tough day today (Tuesday) as a team. The girls are working hard, but we are still suffering from the weather back home and not being able to get outside as much as we would have liked. We're struggling with our short-game skills and our course-management skills. Those are aspects of the game that are difficult to simulate unless you are able to get outside on the course.

"Obviously, we have a lot of work to do in the next 10 days before the conference championship, but I have confidence in the girls and they have confidence in themselves that they can make a good showing at the Mountain West Championship. Hopefully, the weather will cooperate when we get home and let us get the kind of practice out on the course that we need."

The BYU Dixie Classic was played at the Sunbrook Golf Course in St. George, Utah. Each round was played on a different course at Sunbrook. The three courses were: The Point, Woodbridge and Blackrock. Each of the three courses played to a par of 72. The format for the tournament was 27 holes on Monday, April 9 followed by another 27 holes on Tuesday, April 10.

The Wyoming women's team will conclude their 2001 spring schedule on April 23-25 at the Mountain West Conference Championship in Sunriver, Ore.
