March 29, 2001
LARAMIE, Wyo. -
The Wyoming Cowgirls closed out the final round of the 2001 Dr. Donnis Thompson Hawaii Rainbow Invitational with a round of 327 and finished 15th in a field of 18 of the top teams in the country. The Cowgirls shot a three-round total of 988. Senior Jana Johnson, from Buffalo, Wyo., led the way for Wyoming with a final round two-over par 74. Johnson tied for 37th place out of 97 golfers with a total of 236. Oklahoma State captured the team title with a 54-hole total of 895. Natalie Gulbis of Arizona won the individual crown, shooting an even-par total of 216 for the three-day competition. Wyoming's Johnson and Gulbis shot identical rounds of 74 on the final day. They were two of only 10 individuals to shoot a 74 or lower score in Thursday's final round. "Jana (Johnson) played a great final round ," said Wyoming women's golf coach Jill Johnson. "It was the best round Jana has shot all season. Considering the difficulty of the course and the quality of the competition, it was one of the best rounds Jana has played during her collegiate career. "Jana improved every round of the tournament. She began with a round of 82 on Tuesday, shot an 80 on Wednesday and then put up the great score of 74 on Thursday. Jana has been working hard at improving her game, and that work paid off this week." The tournament was played at the Olomana Golf Links in Waimanalo, Hawaii. The course measured 6,075 yards and played to a par of 72. The Wyoming women's team will conclude their regular-season schedule on April 9-10 at the BYU Dixie Classic in St. George, Utah, before competing in the Mountain West Conference Championship on April 23-25 in Sunriver, Ore.
