COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - Although Utah clinched the regular season crown with three games to spare, this year marked the closest MWC race since the conference was formed in 1999. Never before have seven of the eight teams tallied at least five losses in conference play. An MWC record three conference games were decided in overtime this season.

MWC CHAMPIONSHIP NOTES

Utah will be the No. 1 seed in the MWC Championship for the third time in four years. Colorado State was the only other No. 1 seed (2001-02). New Mexico is the No. 2 seed for the second straight year. The MWC has produced three different conference tournament champions each of the last three years, with the No. 1 seed winning only once.

Heading into this year's conference championship:

  • The No. 1 and No. 2 seeds have met only once in the conference championship finals (2000) with (1) Utah defeating (2) BYU 61-47. The 2000 championship marked the only time the No. 1 seed made it to the finals.
  • The No. 4 seed has made it to the finals the past two years (BYU-2001, UNLV-2002), but lost both times.
  • BYU enters this year's tournament with its lowest seed at No. 5.
  • The top three seeds have never lost a quarterfinal game.
  • The top two seeds are a combined 3-3 in semifinal games.
  • Two of the last three championship games have been decided by 14 or more points.
