FORT COLLINS, Colo. - The Colorado State women's basketball team opened up the 2009-10 season Friday night with a win over Montana, 72-64, in front of 1,001 cheering fans in Moby Arena.

The Rams, down by three at half, were led to victory by the sophomore trio of Kim Mestdagh, Meghan Heimstra and Natalie van den Adel. Heimstra scored 13 points of her 16 points in the second half while leading the Rams in rebounding with 11. Heimstra's 11 rebounds were a career high for the sophomore from Longmont, Colo. Mestdagh led the team in scoring with 17 points, 12 of which came in the second half. Van den Adel scored 13 points and was 6-for-7 from the field.

"We're more mentally stable this year.  We do what coach says," Heimstra said. "She wants us to go out and play steady."

The Rams had trouble shooting in the first half from the field as they went 9-for-28. However, Colorado State's 11 free-throws helped to keep them in the game and were only down three at half.

The Rams buckled down on the defensive end in the second half and forced Montana to shoot only 28 percent from the field. Colorado State's defense turned 18 Montana turnovers into 23 points.

"I thought defensively we caused them to be tired, to miss some easy shots," Head Coach Kristen Holt said. "I think our kids are pretty gutty."

Kenzie De Boer led the Lady Grizz in scoring with 23 points and scored Montana's only two three-pointers.
Colorado State will play its second game of the season Sunday against Wichita State in Moby Arena. Tip-off is set for 2 p.m.
