Nov. 11, 2011
LARAMIE, Wyo. -
The Wyoming Cowgirl basketball team opened up the 2011-12 regular season with a tough 62-56 loss against the Utah State Aggies, on Friday night, in Laramie.
"Tonight's game had a number of swings in it. We were 1-13 in the first half from beyond the arc and then 6-11 in the second," said head coach Joe Legerski. "If nothing else it shows you the youth of this team in their first game. Utah State is a very talented team and I thought in the last four minutes may have been the difference in the basketball game with their experience. They got the ball where they needed to and hit some big shots when they needed to. I liked our effort we kept fighting to the last second. Kayla Woodward to get her first double-double in her first game out as a Cowgirl was very impressive. Played 38 minutes and I liked what I saw from her. Brenna Freeze also gave us a lift when Chaundra (Sewell) got in foul trouble."
Three Cowgirls finished their night in double figures led by true freshman Kayla Woodward. She recorded her first double-double of her career with 15 points and 10 rebounds. Kaitlyn Mileto and Ashley Sickles each added ten points, while two other players finished with six. Wyoming shot 18-54 (.333) from the field and out rebounded the Aggies 42-39.
Utah State was led by Ashlee Brown with a game high 18 points and 13 rebounds. Jennifer Schlott and Maddy Plunkett each added 12. The Aggies were 20-59 (.339) from the field and 19-23 (.826) from the free throw line.
Utah State got on the board first with two quick baskets to give them a 4-0 lead. Kaitlyn Mileto got the Cowgirls going with 15:50 on the clock. Her basket would start a 6-0 run for Wyoming giving them an 8-4 lead through the second media timeout. Free throws by the Aggies would end a seven minute scoring drought for them. The Cowgirls also went on a bit of a lull going four minutes without scoring. With the Cowgirls up by the score of 10-6, Kayla Woodward hit a three-point field goal to give them a 13-7 advantage with just over four minutes in the half. Despite being outscored the rest of the way, Wyoming still took an 18-16 lead into the lockerroom.
It was the Aggies who came out strong to begin the second half scoring the first five points to take the 21-18 lead. An Ashley Sickles free throw got Wyoming going, but another run from Utah State put them ahead 25-19. Two baskets by Kayla Woodward pulled the Cowgirls to within two 25-23. The two teams traded a few baskets until USU regained a 33-27 advantage. Wyoming chipped away at the lead and scored eight straight including a three point shot by Ashley Sickles with the shot clock winding down to put them up 35-33. A 5-2 run by Utah State made it 38-37, which was answered with a three point shot by Kaylee Hoffman. After a basket by the Aggies evened it up at 40, UW went up by four 44-40. Utah State responded with 11 of the next 13 to give them a five point lead, 51-46, with 2:23 left in the game. The Cowgirls tried to battle their way back into it, but they were short on time. Free throws would seal the 62-56 win for Utah State.
Wyoming will be on the road for the first time in 2011 as they travel to Denver. They will take on the Denver Pioneers, on Monday, Nov. 14. The game is set for 7:00 p.m.
