No. 24 BYU Tops Idaho State to Open Season, 73-50 Shawnee Slade and Mallary Gillespie each score 10 points to lead Cougars.
Nov. 10, 2006
PROVO, Utah (AP) -Turnovers were an issue in the first half for No. 24 Brigham Young, but not enough to keep the Cougars from a 73-50 win against Idaho State Friday in the first round of the preseason Women's National Invitation Tournament. Shawnee Slade and Mallary Gillespie each had 10 points to lead BYU in the season opener for both teams. Facing the Big Sky Conference regular-season champions from last year, the Cougars got off to a slow start. They had 11 turnovers at halftime, but still managed to lead by 17 points, 42-25. Three-point baskets did in ISU, which surrendered 6-of-10 in the opening 20 minutes and nine total. ISU was led by Natalie Doma's 14 points. She added 11 rebounds for the Bengals, who shot 32.7 percent from the field (18-of-55) and missed 13-of-16 3-point attempts. The score was tied at 9 early before a 19-6 BYU run over the next nine minutes put the Bengals away. Gillespie scored the final basket of that stretch, a 3-pointer that put the Cougars ahead 28-15 with about five minutes left in the first half. The win advances BYU to the second round of the WNIT, for a Monday night game at No. 4 Stanford.
