March 9, 2005 DENVER - Despite a career-high 25 points by freshman Sara Hunter, the Rams suffered a 70-65 loss to BYU in the first round of the Mountain West Conference Championships at Pepsi Center on Wednesday night. Hunter set the Mountain West Championship freshman record for three-point baskets in a single game with seven, and was just one shy of the overall record and also shattered the record for points by a freshman (19, Utah's Kim Smith - 2003). She also set the overall and freshman records for three-point percentage with a 70 percent effort (7-for-10). The first half was a back-and-forth battle between the Cougars and the Rams with 12 lead changes and six ties. The Rams held a one-point advantage at 34-33 with 2:22 left in the first half, but a 7-0 run by the Cougars closed out the half with a 40-34 score. Colorado State would find themselves down by eight before Hunter would hit a three-point basket sparking an 8-0 run for the Rams. The second half would again be back-and-forth until the final 1:30 when the Cougars would close the game on a 7-2 run. The Rams will await word on a possible postseason berth on Sunday.
