Cowgirl Basketball Pulls Out Overtime Thriller Against UNLV, 51-47
Woodward leads the way with 16 points and seven rebound

The Wyoming Cowgirl basketball team needed extra time but came away with the 51-47 victory over the UNLV Lady Rebels, on Saturday night in Las Vegas. They are now 9-12 overall and 5-3 in the Mountain West, while the Lady Rebels fall to 17-7 overall and 5-3 in league play.
"So many players stepped up tonight from Kayla and Chaundra to Brenna and Alison giving us a big lift off the bench," said head coach Joe Legerski. "At times, we need to be a little crisper on offensive but I can never fault the effort. Tremendous effort by a young team that is learning and every day."
Three Cowgirls finished the game in double-figures led by freshman Kayla Woodward. She recorded 16 points plus seven rebounds. Chaundra Sewell followed with 14 points and seven boards while Brenna Freeze added a career high ten points. Wyoming shot 20-52 (.385) from the field and 8-11 (.727) from the free throw line.
UNLV was led by Jamie Smith with 11 points and five rebounds, while Sandrine Nzeukou finished with 10 points and 11 rebounds. The Lady Rebels were 17-54 (.315) from the field and 10-15 (.667) from the free throw line.
It took both teams a couple of minutes to get on the board as a layup by Kayla Woodward at 17:53 put the Cowgirls in the scoring column first. A three-point field goal by Jamie Smith on the next possession gave UNLV a 3-2 lead, then another basket by the Lady Rebels made it 5-2 going into the first media timeout. Six straight points by UNLV out of the break extended their lead to nine, 11-2. A basket from Kaitlyn Mileto ended the run and a five minute scoring drought for the Cowgirls. Her basket would begin a 7-2 run to pull them to within two, 13-11. The Lady Rebels responded with two free throws and a basket to increase the lead to six, 17-11, with 7:00 minutes left in the first half. Chaundra Sewell hit a basket for Wyoming to stop a four minute scoring drought and then both teams went cold. Each team would score one basket in the final four minutes of the half as the Lady Rebels took a 19-15 lead going into the lockerroom.
Kayla Woodward led all scorers for Wyoming with six points along with four rebounds. Chaundra Sewell added four points and four rebounds. The Cowgirls shot 7-25 (.280) from the field and committed 11 turnovers. UNLV was led by Sandrine Nzeukou with eight followed by Lenita Sanford with four. Jamie Smith finished with five rebounds. The Lady Rebels shot 8-24 (.333) from the field and out rebounded the Cowgirls 19-15.
Chaundra Sewell pulled Wyoming to within two, 19-17, to begin the second half but UNLV ran off the next eight straight points to extend the lead to double-figures, 27-17. A basket by Kayla Woodward ended the run to make the score 27-19 heading into the first media timeout. Out of the break, Wyoming scored six of the next eight points to make it a four point game, 29-25. A basket by Danielle Miller stopped a four minute drought for the Lady Rebels to get the score back to 31-25. The Cowgirls continued to battle back as a 10-2 run including a huge three-point field goal by Brenna Freeze to give them their first lead of the second half, 35-33. Five straight points by Markiell Styles helped UNLV regain a three-point advantage, 38-35, with 3:53 remaining. The Cowgirls continued to fight back as they scored six of eight to give the Cowgirls a one point lead, 41-40. With under a minute, Chaundra Sewell made the score 43-30. On the next possession, a three-point field goal by Kelli Thompson tied it up wtih 38.8 seconds remaining in the game. Wyoming would have two chances at winning the game but didn't connect as the two teams headed to overtime.
Kayla Woodward and Chaundra Sewell scored the first two baskets of the extra period giving Wyoming a 47-43 lead. A free throw from Mia Bell made it a three-point game, 47-44. A set of free throws from Brenna Freeze got the score back to five, 49-45, for the Cowgirls. UNLV pulled to within two, 49-47, with 1:48 left in game. Neither team could score until the Lady Rebels had a chance with 8.2 seconds on the clock. They would miss the shot, Chaundra Sewell got the rebound and hit two free throws to seal the 51-47 win.
The Cowgirls will have the week off before returning back to action on Saturday, Feb. 11 against the New Mexico Lobos. The game is set for 2:00 p.m. The University of Wyoming's annual Walk for Women for breast cancer research is scheduled to begin with registration at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 11, at the Arena-Auditorium concourse. The walk starts at 11:30 a.m., followed by a lunch and silent auction.
