Buck Falls In Final Still earns automatic entry to the National Indoor Championships.
Oct. 23, 2005 Air Force senior Shannon Buck couldn't solve Luke Shields of Boise State on Sunday at the 2005 Wilson/ITA Region VII Men's Tennis Championships. Buck fell to Shields in the singles final, 6-2, 6-3, then partnered with fellow senior Trevor Johnson to lose the doubles finals to Shields and Thomas Shoeck, 8-1. Despite losing the singles final, Buck earned an automatic entry to the National Indoor Championships, held Nov. 3-6 at Ohio State University. He is the first Air Force player to qualify for the National Indoor Tournament. Buck, who was the tournament's No. 3 seed, survived three three-set matches, including a 3-6, 6-3, 6-4 semifinal win over the No. 2-seeded Adam Holmstrom of Denver, in his five victories en route to the finals. Buck advanced farther in a regional tournament than any Air Force player in history. Buck and Johnson, the tournament's 10th-seeded doubles team, defeated the Nos. 2, 3 and 6 seeds before facing Shields and Schoeck in the finals.
