BYU to Play in ITA/Omni Hotels Regional Championship Event to be held Oct. 22-26 in Las Vegas.
Oct. 14, 2003 PROVO, Utah - After a grueling week long tournament in Tennessee the BYU men's tennis team will take a week off to prepare for the ITA/Omni Hotels Regional Championship in Las Vegas Oct. 22-26. The Regional Championship will mark the fouth fall event the Cougars have competed in including the BYU Invitational and ITA All-American tournaments. BYU saw success last year as Carlos Lozano and Erik Nyman claimed first place in the doubles circuit of the Regional Championships. The second-seeded team was able to win both their semifinal and final match and qualify to participate in Nationals in Dallas. BYU senior Erik Nyman comes off a stellar performance in the ITA All-American in Chattanooga, Tenn. as he placed fifth overall in the tournament. The other seven BYU players ended their national tournament debut early as they struggled to make it past the pre-qualifying round. "Our showing in the All-American by Nyman was a good thing for BYU athletics," Pearce said. "The whole team gave a great effort. Now we look forward to competing well in Las Vegas." Last Week: ITA All-American Championships BYU's Erik Nyman advanced as far as the men's singles consolation semifinal round of the ITA All-American Championship in Chattanooga, Tenn. Saturday before returning home. Nyman was defeated by Pedro Rico of Pepperdine in the semifinal match in a hard fought three-set match 3-6, 7-5, 6-4. Rico later fell to men's singles consolation winner Conor Niland of California 7-5, 6-3. All in all, BYU men's head coach Brad Pearce is extremely pleased with the effort and overall performance of senior Nyman. "Erik's leadership is just so valuable to this young team," Pearce said. "He played so well and almost went all the way. What a great competitor." Coach Pearce and Nyman returned to Provo Saturday following Nyman's loss in the semifinal round. Had Nyman won the semifinal match, he would have deferred play in the final match Sunday afternoon to comply with BYU's standing policy of not playing on Sunday. Updated rankings resulting from the ITA All-American Championship will be announced soon. MEN'S SINGLES QUALIFYING
