LAS VEGAS - UNLV saw six of its seven men's tennis players earn a spot on the 2006 Academic All-Mountain West Conference Team, which was released this week.

The Rebels' impressive total tied with New Mexico for the league lead this season and matches the program record set just last year. Combined with the women's total of five this year, the UNLV tennis teams set an overall record with 11 academic honorees.

Romain Massaro, who was earlier named UNLV's Most Outstanding Male Scholar-Athlete of the Year and CoSIDA Academic Second Team All-District, earned the league award for the fourth time in his career. The senior from Paris, France, holds a 3.87 grade point average in journalism.

Joining him were repeat honorees David Campbell and Jonathan Hooper as well as first-year transfer Brett Hunter and rookies Elliot Wronski and Wesley Burrows.

To be eligible for selection, a student-athlete must have completed at least one academic term at the member institution, maintain a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or better and be a starter or significant contributor.

"We always place a high priority on academics and it's good to see the guys get recognized for their hard work in the classroom," UNLV men's tennis head coach Owen Hambrook said.

Three Rebels -- Massaro, Burrows and Wronski -- earned the additional title of MWC Scholar-Athlete. To be eligible for selection student-athletes must have completed at least two academic terms at the member institution, while maintaining a cumulative grade point average of 3.5 or better, and have participated in varsity competition for their team.
