COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - Five University of Utah men's tennis players have earned Mountain West Conference academic accolades, the league office announced this week. Four of them earned the Schloar-Athlete award, the highest academic honor given by the conference, for the 2008-09 academic year,.

To be eligible for the MWC Scholar-Athlete Award, student-athletes must have completed at least two academic terms at the member institution, while maintaining a cumulative grade point average of 3.5 or better, and have participated in varsity competition in an NCAA-sponsored sport.

The Scholar-Athlete award was bestowed upon Timmy Allin (Junior, 3.82, Chinese), Phillip Eilers (Junior, 3.52, International Business Administration), Stephen Jacobs (Sophomore, 3.62, Mechanical Engineering), and Othman Zerouali-Ouariti (Junior, 2.55, Business). Allin and Jacobs are both multiple-year winners of the award.

All four players were also named to the MWC Academic All-Conference team for the spring semester. Additionally, Benito Suriano (Freshman, 3.42, Mechanical Engineering).

To earn academic all-conference honors, student-athletes must have completed at least one academic term at the member institution while maintaining a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or better, and be a starter or significant contributor. Sports included in the spring semester awards are baseball, basketball, golf, swimming and diving, tennis and track and field.
