Ute Student-Athletes Named Verizon Academic All-Americans
Bukovec and Chaichana selected to the third team
June 10, 2003 SALT LAKE CITY - The University of Utah Athletics Department is proud to announce that seniors Jernej Bukovec and Kaisorn Chaichana were selected to the 2003 Verizon Academic All-American third team. The Verizon Academic All-America Teams program recognizes student-athletes who have succeeded on the field and in the classroom. Individuals are selected by votes from CoSIDA, the 1,800-member College Sports Information Directors of America. To be eligible, an athlete must be a varsity starter or key reserve and maintain a cumulative GPA of at least 3.20 on a scale of 4.00. Since the program's inception in 1952, over 12,000 student-athletes have been honored with the award. The Men's At-Large category for Academic All-America honors contains the sports of fencing, golf, gymnastics, hockey, lacrosse, rifle, skiing, swimming, tennis, volleyball, water polo and wrestling. Chaichana, a biology major with an emphasis in pre-med, is a senior on the men's tennis team and sustained an almost flawless 3.99 GPA. Recently, Chaichana was emitted to John Hopkins Medical School. This season, he earned a dual record of 12-8 and a 13-12 overall record. The Sandy, Utah, native was selected team captain this season. The ITA Scholar-Athlete was also awarded with the Burtis Evan's Award for the University's top academic male athlete in 2003.
Bukovec, a member of the 2003 National Champion ski team, has upheld a 3.64 GPA, while majoring in finance. The Ljubljana, Slovenia native, skied fourth in the giant slalom and ninth in the slalom at the 2003 NCAA Championships. This season, the down-hill skier also won the C.D. Reddish Memorial Award, which is given to the upper classman who has contributed the most to the team, with respect to community relations.
