MWC men's tennis players end season at NCAA Championships Buck, Nehles fall in singles play, Mann and Ganger and Stotland and Kowalski fall in doubles
May 26, 2005 COLLEGE STATION, TEXAS -¬ The 2005 tennis season came to an end for six Mountain West Conference men's players with losses at the NCAA Men's Tennis Championships at the George P. Mitchell Tennis Center in College Station, Texas, Thursday. Matches were delayed twice by rain, including a three-hour delay from approximately 1-4 p.m., CT. Air Force's Shannon Buck and UNLV's Henner Nehles lost in singles play, while the doubles teams of Miron Mann and Zach Ganger of Utah and Ryan Stotland and David Kowalski of New Mexico also fell. No. 74 Nehles lost to No. 9-16 seed Franticek Babej of South Alabama, 6-3, 6-7 (4), 6-4. The loss ends an 11-match winning streak for Nehles and he finishes the year with a record of 29-9 overall. The 29 wins are the sixth-most in UNLV program history. Buck of Air Force lost to No. 37-ranked Izak van der Merwe of Old Dominion, 6-3, 6-2. The loss breaks a string of 18 consecutive victories for Buck. He finishes the year with a record of 25-3. Buck became the first player in Air Force history to win a match at the NCAA Championship with his victory yesterday over Josh Cohen of Miami. Utah's doubles team of Ganger and Mann lost to No. 38-ranked Marko Rajevac and David North of Georgia Tech, 6-3, 6-4. Ganger and Mann, who were ranked No. 34, end the year with a 23-3 record. Stotland and Kowalski, ranked 14th nationally, put up a fierce fight against the No. 1 seed John Isner and Antonio Ruiz of Georgia, but ultimately lost in three sets, 6-7 (3), 7-6 (2), 6-4. The duo finishes the year with a 25-9 record.
