Air Force's Shannon Buck and UNLV's Henner Nehles win singles matches at NCAA Championship Both play in second round tomorrow; doubles also gets underway
May 25, 2005 COLLEGE STATION, TEXAS -¬ Shannon Buck of Air Force and Henner Nehles of UNLV each won their first-round singles matches at the NCAA Men's Tennis Championship at the George P. Mitchell Tennis Center in College Station, Texas, Wednesday. No. 67-ranked Buck defeated No. 42-ranked Josh Cohen of Miami, 6-0, 2-6, 6-4, and will face Izak van der Merwe of Old Dominion in tomorrow's second round. The Old Dominion player upset No. 2 seed Sam Warburg of Stanford, 5-7, 6-3, 6-1. With the victory, Buck improves to 25-2 on the season. No. 74-ranked Nehles defeated No. 39-ranked Scott Brown of Vanderbilt, 6-2, 6-4, and advances to tomorrow's second round where he'll face No. 9-16 seed Franticek Babej of South Alabama, at 11:30 a.m., CT. Babej defeated Minnesota's Avery Ticer today, 2-6, 6-4, 6-2. The win is Nehles' 11th consecutive victory and he is now 29-8 overall. Doubles action gets underway tomorrow as well. New Mexico's Ryan Stotland and David Kowalski will play No. 1 seed John Isner and Antonio Ruiz of Georgia, while Utah's Miron Mann and Zach Ganger will face No. 38-ranked Marko Rajevac and David North of Georgia Tech. Doubles will not start before 1 p.m., CT.
