Maiberger and Redondo Earn All-America Honors as NCAA Brackets Announced Maiberger begins NCAA singles play on Wednesday while duo opens tournament play on Thursday
May 21, 2002 SAN DIEGO - The San Diego State men's tennis doubles team of junior Oliver Maiberger and sophomore Ryan Redondo were named All-Americans by virtue of the NCAA Doubles Championship draw announced on Tuesday afternoon. The duo, which earned the school's first grand slam title with a victory in the Omni Hotel Indoor National Championships back in November, will begin the quest for their second grand slam title in the 32-team championship beginning on Thursday in College Station, Texas.
Maiberger, ranked 26th nationally in singles, will begin play in the 64-player NCAA Singles Championship, with first-round action on Wednesday.
The team of Maiberger and Redondo earned All-America status based on the team's number three seed in the national championship. The top eight doubles seeds automatically received All-America honors. Maiberger and Redondo will face 18th-ranked Matias Boeker and Bo Hodge of Georgia on Thursday.
Maiberger and Redondo posted a 26-8 record this season, including a 14-6 mark in dual action. The duo has won six consecutive matches and has seven victories over doubles teams currently ranked in the top 10 nationally. Included in that total are two wins this season over the nation's top-ranked pair of Jean-Julien Rojer and Marcin Matkowski of UCLA. Times for first round doubles matches have yet to be announced.
Maiberger will meet Tulane's Victor Romero, ranked 56th nationally, in the first round of singles competition at 10 a.m. PDT on Wednesday. Maiberger is 26-9 this season and has won nine of his last 11 matches. The junior is 25-1 this season against players ranked outside the nation's top 25. Last season Maiberger earned All-America honors by advancing to the round of 16 at the NCAA Singles Championship. This is the third consecutive year Maiberger has competed in the singles championship.
The NCAA Singles and Doubles Championships are conducted through May 27 in College Station.
