MWC Athletes Earn ITA Awards

BYU's James Ludlow, UNLV's Owen Hambrook and Elliot Wronski and Utah's Graeme Cox collect regional ITA honors.

May 17, 2007

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - BYU senior James Ludlow, UNLV sophomore Elliot Wronski, UNLV head coach Owen Hambrook and Utah assistant coach Graeme Cox have earned regional honors from the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) for the 2007 season. As regional winners, all four individuals are now finalists for the national awards in their respective categories, which will be announced Tuesday, May 22.

Currently 77th in the national singles rankings, Ludlow was named the Mountain Region Farnsworth/ITA Senior Player of the Year for his efforts during the 2007 season. The award is presented to the individual who has contributed the most to his team in the following areas: leadership, sportsmanship, tennis performance and tennis improvement during his collegiate career. Hailing from Salt Lake City, Utah, Ludlow posted a record of 22-14 in singles play and helped guide the Cougars to a runner-up finish at the 2007 MWC Championship.

Wronski, who is currently the first alternate for the 2007 NCAA Singles Championship field, becomes the third Rebel to win the Mountain Region ITA Player to Watch Award. A sophomore from Cheltenham, England, Wronski is ranked 60th in the nation after compiling a singles record of 19-12 this season and leading the Rebels to their first MWC Championship crown.

The second UNLV mentor to win the Mountain Region ITA Coach of the Year Award, Hambrook guided the Rebels to a third-place regular-season conference finish and the MWC Tournament crown, the program's first league title of any kind since 1996. Hambrook has compiled a 54-38 record in four seasons at UNLV and his .587 winning percentage ranks second all-time at the school.

Cox, a former student-athlete at Utah, just completed his 10th season as an assistant coach for the Utes, helping guide the team to a 12-11 overall record this season. He rejoined the Ute tennis staff for the 2001 season after coaching previously at the school from 1994-98.
