ITA Announces 2008 Regional Tennis Award Recipients Seven MWC student-athletes and coaches recognized
May 15, 2008 COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - Seven Mountain West tennis student-athletes and coaches were among those honored by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) when the organization announced its 2008 Regional Awards on Wednesday. New Mexico head men's tennis coach Alan Dils was named the ITA Mountain Regional Coach of the Year, while his twin brother Loren, collected ITA Mountain Regional Assistant Coach of the Year honors. The Lobos finished the season with a 20-8 overall record and 5-1 mark in conference play, sharing the MWC regular season title. On the women's side, BYU's Anastasia Surkova was tabbed the ITA Central Region Senior Player of the Year after compiling a 15-9 singles record this season, spending the majority of her time at the No. 1 position on the team and earning a No. 62 national ranking. The Russian native also posted a 6-1 record in conference matches during the 2008 campaign. Over her career at BYU, Surkova has posted a 91-29 overall singles record with a .758 winning percentage. TCU sophomore Nina Munch-Soegaard was named the ITA Southwest Region ITA Player to Watch, while the Lady Frogs' Colin Foster was tabbed the ITA Southwest Region Assistant Coach of the Year. Munch-Soegaard, a product of Amarillo, Texas, is currently ranked No. 60 nationally and has netted a 16-8 record this spring at the top singles position while posting an overall mark of 26-11 for the 2007-08 season. Foster helped guide the Lady Frogs to an overall mark of 20-6 this spring and an undefeated league record en route to the MWC regular-season title and an NCAA Tournament berth.
San Diego State junior Esther Cadua was presented with the ITA Cissie Leary Award for Sportsmanship, which is given to a women's player whose dedication and commitment has enhanced her team's performance and exemplified the spirit of college tennis. Cadua, a San Diego native, compiled a team-leading 23 overall victories and posted a 16-7 record in dual-match play while competing at the No. 4 position, finishing the 2008 MWC campaign with a 7-1 mark.
Utah's Ruthann Allen was chosen as the ITA Central Region Assistant Coach of the Year after helping guide the Utes to a 15-8 overall record and fourth-place MWC tie (5-3) this season. |
