Dils Honored As ITA Mountain Region Assistant Coach Of The Year This is the third time Dils has claimed the award since 2000
May 12, 2005 ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - Assistant coach Loren Dils was named the Intercollegiate Tennis Association's Assistant Coach of the Year today. It is the third time he has received the award, taking the honor home in 2000 and sharing it with former Lobo tennis player Gene Carswell of San Diego State in 2003. Dils, in his ninth year as an assistant coach with the University of New Mexico men's tennis program, has helped coach five All-Americans during his tenure and has been associated with seven conference championships. "He is basically another head coach here," head coach Alan Dils said. "We are lucky he stays here as an assistant instead of seeking out his own head coaching position, which he is more than qualified to attain." Dils has been offerered numerous head coaching positions, but has chosen to remain with the program he is committed to. Dils, a native of Belen, N.M. and graduate of Northern Arizona, has worked closely with seniors David Kowalski and Ryan Stotland, who are setting new program bests with Dils' guidance. The duo earned the highest ranking, placing third in the ITA's national doubles poll to kick off the 2005 spring season. Kowalski and Stotland were also the first doubles team to represent UNM in the finals of a national tournament, just barely missing the title of the 2004 ICY HOT/ITA All-American Championships in Chattanooga, Tenn., falling 9-7. 2005 INTERCOLLEGIATE TENNIS ASSOCIATION MOUNTAIN REGION AWARD WINNERS WILSON/ITA COACH OF THE YEAR: Mike Phillips, Montana State University-Bozeman
