ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - If you want to call senior Divan Coetzee the best Lobos men's tennis player ever, there are statistics to back that up.

He has won 37 singles matches this season = the most in history by a University of New Mexico player.

He is tied for the school's mark in career wins at 96, and Coetzee has at least two more matches to play as a Lobo.

Good stuff, especially for a South African native who most of his life was told his tennis game was a dead-end street.

"I was told all my life that with the style of tennis I play, wait two years and people will be bigger and stronger and I won't be able to compete," said Coetzee, 24. "I sometimes think my biggest motivation to play pro tennis is to try and prove people wrong again."
