Zivkovic, Easley Honored Rebel tennis earns three ITA regional awards.
May 10, 2001 LAS VEGAS - The UNLV men's tennis program received three regional awards from the Intercollegiate Tennis Association, the school announced Thursday.
Senior Nenad Zivkovic earned two honors as he was named the Region 7 Farnsworth Senior Player of the Year as well as winner of the John Van Nostrand Memorial Award, which is given to a senior player who intends to pursue a career on the professional tennis tour.
Zivkovic, a native of Belgrade, Serbia, will make his first trip to the NCAA singles championships later this month. He has a singles record 17-10 this season and 54-49 in his career.
A 2001 first team All-Mountain West Conference selection in both singles and doubles, Zivkovic advanced to the quarterfinals of the ITA Indoor Championships earlier this season. In 1998, he and partner Gregor Skorin won the school's third Grand Slam title at the Clay Court Championships in Baltimore, Md., and were the nation's top-ranked doubles team for a portion of 1999.
Zivkovic is the second Rebel to earn the Farnsworth senior award, joining Asaf Tishler in 1998. He is the first-ever UNLV recipient of the Van Nostrand Memorial award.
Also receiving a regional honor was head coach Dr. Larry Easley, who was voted Region 7 Coach of the Year. Easley's squad finished 13-10 overall, including 7-3 vs. teams in its region, and reached a national ranking as high as No. 32. Easley was also named regional coach of the year in 1998.
Zivkovic and Easley will go against honorees from the other seven ITA regions to determine the winners on a national level. All honorees will be recognized at the annual ITA Awards Banquet in Athens, Ga., later this month.
