Two future Frogs to face each other in UIL 4A State Tennis Championship Nichols and Powers reach finals of singles championship
May 8, 2007 AUSTIN, Texas - Two future TCU men's tennis players, Zach Nichols and Casey Powers, have both reached the singles finals of the UIL 4A State Tennis Championship held in Austin, Texas. Both players have signed National Letters of Intent with the Horned Frogs, and will face off in the title match today at 1:30 p.m. CT.
Nichols, from Lake Travis High School in Austin, Texas, signed with TCU last fall. Nichols, who is the brother of current TCU women's tennis standout Kewa Nichols, was the No. 1 player in Boy's 16 in Texas in 2005 and also No. 1 in Boy's 18 in 2006.
Powers, who recently signed with the TCU men's program, currently attends Highland Park High School in Dallas, Texas. Powers won this year's singles Region II title, and captured the 2006 4A state doubles championship.
"We're really excited to have Casey as a part of our Frog family," said TCU head coach Dave Borelli. "Casey was ranked among the top players in his age group in Texas, and had to make the switch from a two-handed forehand to a one-handed forehand.
"He's really starting to play good tennis, and has a lot of upside, and we expect him to be a strong player for us as we build our program."
Both prep standouts will join the TCU men this fall. For results from today's match, visit www.gofrogs.com.
