Three Mountain West Conference Tennis Teams Receive NCAA Tournament Selections Seven Selected in Singles, Two Chosen in Doubles.

Colorado Springs, Colo. The Mountain West Conference received three at-large team selections to compete in the NCAA Tennis Championships announced today. The New Mexico women¹s team made the 64-team field, while both the San Diego State men¹s and women¹s teams were chosen to compete. Seven individuals (four women and three men) were selected to compete in their respective 64-player singles tournaments. Two doubles teams (one men¹s and one women¹s) will compete in those 32-team draws, while a second men¹s team is an alternate. The New Mexico women¹s team is making its fifth consecutive appearance in the NCAA Championship. Ranked No. 49 in the nation, the Lobos posted a 15-11 overall record and will face No. 22 University of Arizona (9-11) in first round action at the University of Southern California, May 12-14. The fourth team in that regional is the University of Maryland Baltimore County (UMBC). The San Diego State women¹s team is making its ninth consecutive and 14th overall appearance in the NCAA Championship. The Aztecs registered a 14-9 record during the regular-season and are listed No. 30 in the latest national rankings. SDSU will meet South Florida (17-7) in first-round action at Wake Forest, May 13-14. The fourth team competing in the regional at Wake Forest is Virginia Tech. The winners of the 16 regionals will advance to the 2000 NCAA Women¹s Tennis Championship hosted by the University of Pepperdine in Malibu, Calif., May 18-21. The women¹s individual singles and doubles championships follow the team championship in Malibu, May 22-26. The Mtn. West will have four players competing in singles play No. 95-ranked Eline Chiew from BYU, New Mexico¹s Ana Friganovic, No. 29 Katarina Malec from UNLV and No. 59 Megan Payne-Dorny from Utah. UNLV¹s No. 27 ranked duo of Malec and Marianne Bakken will be the lone Mtn. West representative in women¹s doubles action. San Diego State is making its third straight NCAA appearance in the men¹s bracket. The No. 28-ranked Aztecs enter the tournament with a 15-7 record and play No. 30 Washington (15-8) in the first round at Pepperdine. Tulsa will meet Pepperdine in the other first round-match in Malibu. The winners of the 16 men¹s regionals will advance to the 2000 NCAA Men¹s Tennis Championship hosted by the University of Georgia in Athens, Ga., May 20-23. The men¹s individual singles and doubles titles will be contested in Athens following team play, May 24-28. Three Mtn. West players will compete in the singles draw No. 16 Matt Amgwerd from New Mexico, No. 29 Alex Waske from San Diego State and No. 70 Oliver Maiberger also from SDSU. BYU¹s No. 29-ranked team tandem of Gert Vilms and Damien Ward will compete in doubles, while New Mexico¹s duo of Nic Dubey and Matt Amgwerd is the first alternate.
