MWC Tennis Players of the Week UNLV's Elliot Wronski and BYU's Lauren Jones honored.
May 3, 2007 COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - UNLV's Elliot Wronski and BYU's Lauren Jones were named the Mountain West Conference Men's and Women's Tennis Player of the Week, respectively.
Playing at the No. 1 spot in the singles and doubles lineups, Wronski helped the Rebels to their first-ever Mountain West Conference Tournament title last week in Colorado Springs, Colo. In the quarterfinals vs. Utah, he helped UNLV post a 4-0 shutout of the Utes by clinching the doubles point while teaming with Brett Hunter to defeat Utah's 52nd-ranked duo of Miron Mann and Zach Ganger (8-5), then going on to hand the 47th-ranked Ganger a 6-3, 6-4 loss in singles action. In the championship vs. BYU, the sophomore from Cheltenham, England, paired with Hunter again for the Rebels' lone doubles win over James Ludlow and Dominik Kaufhold (8-5) before taking a 7-6, 6-3 singles decision from the 109th-ranked Ludlow. Currently ranked 60th in the nation, Wronski was 3-3 in singles play vs. MWC opponents during the regular season.
A senior from Mission Veijo, Calif., Jones posted a pair of doubles victories and three singles wins as BYU captured its fourth Mountain West Conference Tournament championship last week in Colorado Springs, Colo. Playing at the No. 2 position in singles, Jones registered the clinching decision in all three matches, defeating Colorado State's Lauren Strasburger (6-1, 6-1) in the quarterfinals, New Mexico's Sandra Zmak (6-0, 6-0) in the semifinals and UNLV's Kristina Nedeltcheva (6-3, 3-6, 6-2) in the championship. Jones also helped secure the Cougars' first points in two of those matches, teaming with doubles partner Dolly Chang at No. 2 for an 8-2 quarterfinal win over CSU's Strasburger and Anette Pohjalainen and an 8-2 semifinal victory against New Mexico's Ola Abou-Zekry and Jennifer Ryba. Jones finished the regular season with a 6-1 mark vs. MWC opponents.
