Two Aztecs To Compete At NCAA Championships Maiberger in singles and doubles
May 3, 2001 SAN DIEGO - San Diego State's Oliver Maiberger and Adam Webster received invitations to compete at the NCAA Men's Tennis Championships, May 23-28 in Athens, Ga., the NCAA announced Thursday.
No. 24 Maiberger is the lone Aztec selected to compete in the 64-draw singles championship. The Mountain West Conference Player of the Year posted a 20-3 dual match record this season, including an 18-match winning lasting from Feb. 11 to April 18. The sophomore's victories include wins over two of the nation's top players. He defeated defending national champion and top-ranked Alex Kim of Stanford, 4-6, 6-3, 6-1, Feb. 10. The win snapped a 17-match winning streak for Kim. Maiberger also recorded a win over No. 11 Alexander Hartman of Mississippi, 2-6, 6-3, 6-3, at the ITA National Team Championships on Feb. 17.
Maiberger advanced to the second round of the 2000 NCAA singles championship, falling to eventual champion Kim. He defeated Clemson's Geoff Goffi in the opening round.
Maiberger will team with senior Adam Webster in the doubles championship. The duo have posted a 11-2 recorded since joining efforts midway through the season.
