MWC Sends Four Institutions To 2002 NCAA Tennis Championships Three selected in singles, three chosen in doubles

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - The Mountain West Conference will be represented by four of its eight member institutions, including three singles players and three doubles teams at the 2002 NCAA Tennis Championships. Heading the list for the men is No. 28 San Diego State. On the strength of their first-place finish in last week's MWC Men's Championship in Las Vegas, the Aztecs (17-8, 4-1 MWC) earned an automatic invitation to the Championship, where they will take on Hampton University in the first round at UCLA, May 11-12. UC Santa Barbara is the fourth team in that regional. Individually, SDSU's Oliver Maiberger (No. 26 in the nation), UNLV's Thomas Schneiter (No. 62), New Mexico's Divan Coetzee (No. 114) and BYU's Gert Vilms were selected to compete in the 64-player singles tournament. In doubles competition, No. 3 Oliver Maiberger and Ryan Redondo (San Diego State), No. 7 Gert Vilms and Carlos Lozano (BYU) and No. 23 David Mercier and Nicholas Yip (Utah) will compete in the 32-team draw. On the women's side, No. 18 UNLV (20-3, 6-1 MWC) earned an automatic bid after winning the MWC women's championship crown last week in Provo, Utah. The Rebels will go against No. 39 Oregon in first round action at the University of Southern California, May 11-12. Oral Roberts rounds out that regional. No. 26 San Diego State and No. 45 BYU earned at-large invites to the Championship as well. The Aztecs (18-8, 7-0 MWC) go up against No. 19 Arizona at Arizona State University, May 11-12, while BYU battles 12th-ranked California, May 10-11 in Berkeley, Calif. Southwest Missouri State is the fourth team competing at Arizona State, while No. 25 Fresno State and No. 27 Washington State round out the regional at California. No MWC women's individuals or doubles teams were selected to compete.
Winners of the 16 men's regionals will advance to the 2002 NCAA Men's Championships hosted by Texas A&M, May 18-21. The men's individual singles and doubles championship follows the team championship at Texas A&M on May 22-27. Seeding for both singles and doubles competitions will be announced on May 22, from College Station, Texas. For the women, winners of the regionals will advance to the 2002 NCAA Women's Championships hosted by Stanford University, May 16-19.
