2003 Men's And Women's Tennis All Mountain West Conference Honors Announced New Mexico's Coetzee and Kovacek named Men's and Women's Players of the Year

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - All-conference honors for the 2003-04 season were announced tonight at the Mountain West Conference Men's and Women's Tennis Championships banquet in San Diego, Calif. On the men's side, New Mexico senior Divan Coetzee was named Mountain West Conference Player of the Year, while San Diego State's Markus Dickhardt was awarded the Freshman of the Year. For the women, New Mexico sophomore Maja Kovacek earned the Women's Player of the Year and Air Force senior Laura Nigro won her second consecutive Sportsmanship Award. The 2003-04 MWC Coach of the Year awards will be announced at the conclusion of the 2004 MWC Men's and Women's Tennis Championships on Saturday, May 1. Following is the complete list of the 12-member singles teams and the six doubles teams as selected by the MWC head coaches. MEN'S PLAYER OF THE YEAR- Coetzee, the No. 22 player in the nation, has an overall record of 35-9 on the year (17-4 dual matches). The Clanwilliam, South Africa, product, also posted a 23-12 overall record on the season in doubles play, including a 15-4 mark in dual matches. MEN'S FRESHMAN OF THE YEAR- Dickhardt, a Marburg, Germany, native, compiled an 11-8 overall record this season, including a 4-0 record in conference play. He also tallied 10 wins in doubles competition. WOMEN'S PLAYER OF THE YEAR- Kovacek, the 75th-ranked player in the nation, has a 21-10 overall record on the season (14-6 in dual matches) and finished MWC play with a record of 5-1, all at the No. 1 position. The Pula, Croatia, native, also teamed with Sandy Lukowski (No. 23 doubles team in the nation) to finish the regular season at 27-7 overall (17-3 dual), including a 5-1 conference record. SPORTSMANSHIP AWARD- Nigro, a Lincoln, Neb., native, earned her second straight Sportsmanship Award for her on and off the court contributions as a member of the Air Force women's tennis squad. On the court, she compiled a record of 21-12 overall in singles competition and teamed with Gina Black to go 19-10 overall (14-6 dual) this season, including two wins over top-30 opponents. Off the court, Nigro has kept herself busy. In her four years as a cadet she has completed Basic Training, Combat Survival Training and an internship at Offutt Air Force Base for Operation Air Force. She also participates in the Adopt a School Program - reading to elementary school kids, Kids Force Clinics, Girl Scout Clinics and USTA Clinics. Nigro has also served as a Flight Clerk, Element Clerk, Global Engagement Leader, a Non-Commissioned Officer for Standardization/Evaluation, an Instructor for Survival Training and an Athletic Officer for her squadron. 2004 Mountain West Conference Men's Tennis All-Conference Team Singles
