THIS WEEK: The University of Utah men's tennis team heads to San Diego to compete in the Mountain West Conference Championships April 29-May 1.

REVIEWING LAST WEEK: The Utes battled three conference opponents at home at the Canyon Racquet Club last weekend. On Thursday April 15, Utah fell 6-1 to BYU. Freshman Jason Yap picked up the only win at the No. 5 singles.

On Friday April 16, the Utes lost 5-2 to New Mexico. Sophomore Nick Coutts and freshman Ryan Scott claimed the two points.

The Utes finished the three day series with a 5-2 win over Air Force. Utah ended the regular season with an 11-10 overall mark and a 1-3 mark in the conference.

CHAMPIONSHIP NOTES: The 65th-ranked Lobo men won their second outright Mountain West Conference regular-season title with a 5-0 record to earn the top-seed, while UNLV claimed the second seed, posting a 3-1 record in league play.

No. 73 San Diego State and No. 66 BYU both finished MWC play with 2-2 records. The Aztecs will get the third seed based on beating the Cougars (No. 4 seed), 5-1, in league play.

Utah will get the fifth seed with its 1-3 conference record, and the sixth seed will go to Air Force, which finished with an 0-5 record in MWC play.

QUOTING ASSISTANT COACH Graeme Cox: "This week is what the team works for all year. There is nothing quite as important as the conference tournament. The conference is very even this year and I think that we have a good chance of winning it."
