MWC Tennis Championships Gets Underway Thursday

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - The 2004 Mountain West Conference Men's and Women's Tennis Championships take place this week at the Barnes Tennis Center in San Diego, Calif. San Diego State will host the first-ever combined tennis championship. The New Mexico men and women earned the No. 1 seeds in their respective tournaments by winning the regular-season conference titles.

The 65th-ranked Lobo men won their second outright Mountain West Conference regular-season title (tri-champions in 2002-2003) with a 5-0 record, to earn the top-seed, while UNLV claimed the second seed, posting a 3-1 record in league play. No. 73 San Diego State and No. 66 BYU both finished MWC play with 2-2 records. The Aztecs will get the third seed based on beating the Cougars (No. 4 seed), 5-1, in league play. Utah will get the fifth seed with its 1-3 conference record, and the sixth seed will go to Air Force which finished with an 0-5 record in MWC play.

On the women's side, the No. 28 UNM squad finished with a 7-0 record in league play to earn its first MWC regular-season title and the No. 1 seed. No. 21 BYU earned the No. 2 seed with a 6-1 record in conference play, while the third-seed went to 55th-ranked UNLV which finished 5-2 in MWC play. The fourth and fifth seeds went to No. 69 San Diego State and Colorado State, respectively. The Aztecs finished league play with a 4-3 record, while the Rams finished 3-4 in the conference. Air Force, Utah and Wyoming finished with identical 1-6 records in conference play, and based on the MWC tie-breaking procedure, the Cowgirls claimed the sixth seed, while the Utes earned the seventh seed and the Falcons the No. 8 seed.

The conference tournament will take place April 29-May 1 at Barnes Tennis Center in San Diego, Calif. For the women, the opening day matches will see 2nd-seeded BYU taking on No. 7 seed Utah, and No. 3 seed UNLV vs. No. 6 seed Wyoming at 9 a.m. on Thursday, April 29, followed by 4th-seed San Diego State vs. No. 5 seed Colorado State and top-seeded New Mexico vs. 8th-seeded Air Force at 2 p.m. On the men's side, No. 4 seed BYU takes on No. 5 seed Utah at 11 a.m. on Thursday, followed by 3rd-seeded San Diego State vs. No. 6 Air Force at 2:30 p.m. No. 1 New Mexico and No. 2 UNLV have first-round byes.

The Mountain West Conference Men's and Women's Championship matches will be on Saturday, May 1, with the winners receiving automatic bids into the 2004 NCAA Tennis Championships.
