    Albuquerque, N.M. -- Host University of New Mexico defeated San Diego State by the score of 4-1 to capture the first inaugural Mountain West Conference Men's Tennis Championships today on the courts of the Lobo Tennis Club.

    New Mexico captured the first point by way of their wins at No. 1 and No. 2 doubles. The pair of Matt Amgwerd and Nic Dubey defeated SDSU's Alex Waske and Adam Webster by the score of 8-3. UNM's duo of Takeshi Itoh and Bart Scott defeated San Diego State's Oliver Maiberger and Valentino Pest, 8-6. SDSU's Travis Hasson and Gabe Coren defeated UNM's Andrew Irving and Kyle Russell in a tight match by the score of 9-7.

    In singles New Mexico's Andrew Irving, playing at No. 5, and Scott, playing at No. 6, clinched the match for the Lobos. The other point came from Itoh, playing at No. 3, who defeated SDSU's Valentino Pest by the scores of 7-6, 6-0 to capture the title for New Mexico.

    "We've been through a lot this year," said UNM head coach Alan Dils (named MWC Coach of the Year). "We've had struggles and trials, but all year I knew we had the heart and desire to do it. We never gave up and this is the reward."

    Earlier today in a down to the wire match, BYU defeated UNLV by the score of 4-3 to capture third place.

    In doubles BYU captured the point - taking the No. 1 and No. 3 matches, both in close matches that could have gone either way. The No. 3 doubles went to a tie-breaker where BYU's duo of David White and Jeff Olsen took the match 9-8 (5).

    Both schools battled at each singles position. UNLV took the No. 2, No. 4 and No. 5 matches. The final outcome was decided at the No. 1 singles position where BYU's Damien Ward defeated UNLV's Vladimir Pavicevic by the scores of 1-6, 6-3, 7-6 (9).
