SDSU's Maiberger and UNLV's Janus take home conference honors.

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - San Diego State University sophomore Oliver Maiberger and UNLV sophomore Paulina Janus have been selected Mountain West Conference Men's and Women's Tennis Players of the Week, respectively. The repeat winners claim the final MWC honors for the 2001season. Janus earns MWC honors for the second time this season while Maiberger earns the nod for the third consecutive week and fifth time this season.

Maiberger once again completed a perfect weekend as he posted a 4-0 record in singles and doubles play. The No. 22 ranked player in the country led the No. 59 ranked Aztecs to two wins last weekend. The Aztecs defeated Cal Poly - San Luis Obispo, 5-2, before blanking UC Santa Barbara, 7-0. The Lorsch, Germany, native improved his singles win streak to 17 matches by sweeping Cal Poly's Brandon Fallon, 7-6, 6-1, and UC Santa Barbara's Tom Kosakowski, 6-1, 6-4. In doubles play, Maiberger and partner Adam Webster improved to 10-2 on the year. The duo defeated pairs from Cal Poly, 8-2, and UC Santa Barbara, 8-6. Maiberger has earned MWC honors seven times in his career.

Janus went 5-1 overall in singles and doubles play during UNLV's last week of regular-season competition. First, in No. 1 singles play, she stunned No. 31 Kim Neggemeyer of 8th-ranked Fresno State to lead her team to a near upset. The Rebels were narrowly defeated by the Bulldogs, 4-3.The Warsaw, Poland, native, who was ranked No. 87 last week, saw her national ranking soar to 67th in the country. Later that weekend, she downed Air Force's Brooke Parsons 6-1, 6-4, and New Mexico's Natalia Alekhova, 4-6, 6-1, 6-3. In No. 1 doubles play, Janus teamed with Agnieszka Abram and dropped a match to the 7th-ranked pair of Niggemeyer and Wiggins of Fresno State before soundly defeating duos from Air Force, 8-2, and New Mexico, 8-3.With the Rebels downing the 39th-ranked Lobos, 6-1, it marked the highest-ranked team that No. 65 UNLV had defeated this season. Janus assisted UNLV in earning four straight MWC victories to close the season, which earned the defending champions a third seed in the conference championship. Individually, Janus improved to 13-7 overall, including wins in seven of her last eight matches. Janus and doubles partner Abram are 8-6 at the No. 1 spot.
