New Mexico's Amgwerd Named McLeodUSA Men's Tennis Player of the Week Senior continues to be ranked in the nation's top-20. (4/5)

Colorado Springs, Colo. New Mexico senior Matt Amgwerd has been named the McLeodUSA Men's Tennis Player of the Week for his performance last week. Ranked among the top-20 in the nation in singles all season, Amgwerd claimed his first player of the week honor of the season after helping guide the Lobos to victories over BYU (5-2) and UNLV (4-3) during the week. Playing in the No. 1 slot, he claimed a straight-set (6-3, 6-2) win over BYU¹s Damien Ward on Mar. 31. Amgwerd battled UNLV's Vladimir Pavicevic for three sets before prevailing 6-7, 6-2, 6-4 in the top-slot on Apr. 2. He teamed with two different partners in doubles during the week and split the matches. Paired with Nic Dubey in the top-slot, he lost (8-3) to BYU¹s tandem of Lozano and Ward. Playing with Michael Polasek in the No. 2 position against UNLV, the duo defeated the team of Erez and Pavicevic, 8-5. The winner in 14 of his last 16 matches, Amgwerd owns 31 singles victories this season equalling the most by a UNM men¹s player since Pablo Fernandez went 33-10 in 1995. He boasts a 15-4 record in spring duals, including a 10-4 mark at No. 1 singles.
