MWC Weekly Tennis Honors SDSU's Carrascosa and New Mexico's Kovacek win honors
March 30, 2005 COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. -¬ Armando Carrascosa of San Diego State and Maja Kovacek of New Mexico have been selected the Mountain West Conference Men's and Women's Tennis Players of the Week, respectively. Carrascosa, a senior from Mexicali, Baja, California, helped lead the Aztecs to a 5-2 victory over No. 23-ranked Harvard, March 29. At No. 3 singles, Carrascosa defeated his Harvard opponent, 6-2, 6-4, to clinch the SDSU win in Santa Barbara, Calif. He also teamed with Benedikt Stronk at No. 1 doubles and the duo scored an 8-6 win over Harvard to help lead an Aztec sweep in doubles. The duo is a perfect 5-0 on the season at the No. 1 position. Kovacek, a junior from Pula, Croatia, plays No. 1 singles and No. 1 doubles for the Lobos. She helped New Mexico to two conference victories last week, both over higher ranked teams as the No. 48-ranked Lobos defeated No. 33 San Diego State, 5-2, and No. 35 UNLV, 4-3, both in Las Vegas. New Mexico is now ranked No. 37 after its two wins. Kovacek won all four matches last week, including an upset of No. 22-ranked Elena Gantcheva of UNLV, 6-2, 6-3. Kovacek, ranked No. 61 individually, also defeated her San Diego State opponent, 7-5, 7-5. Kovacek and partner, Iva Gersic, ranked No. 8 nationally, also won both of their doubles matches.
