Alex Waske, Sr., San Diego State Playing in the No. 1 position, Waske helped SDSU to a 4-0 record for the week as he went 3-1 in singles and 3-0 in doubles. His loss came when he retired with an ankle injury after claiming the first set 7-5 over New Mexico¹s Matt Amgwerd on March 19. He started the week with a 6-0, 6-2 win over Tyan Shupe from Texas Tech, then defeated Greg Royce of Yale 7-5, 6-2 and Central Florida¹s Grayden Moore 6-3, 6-1. In doubles, Waske teamed with Valentino Pest for a trio of wins in the top-slot. Waske is now 8-1 in singles, all at the No. 1 position, and stands 7-0 in doubles, 4-0 when playing with Pest. This is the third player of the week honor for Waske, who is the first player to earn consecutive awards. SDSU has claimed four men¹s honors this season. New Mexico Host of 2000 Mtn. West Men¹s Tennis Championship
Team-By-Team Notes No. 37 ranked BYU began a four-match road trip to California with a loss at Cal Mar. 21 and continues through Mar. 25 at Fresno State. In a light week of action, New Mexico faces Drake on Mar. 25. Matt Amgwerd continues to rank among the nation¹s top-10 in singles and top-25 in doubles with partner Nic Dubey for the Lobos. After vaulting to No. 27 in the nation last week, San Diego State reeled off five wins to hold that spot in the rankings. Capping that run was a 5-2 win at Mtn. West foe New Mexico on Mar. 19. The Aztecs will play conference matches vs. Utah and UNLV in Las Vegas this week. After going 1-2 at the Blue-Gray Invitational last week, UNLV is looking forward to its first home match since Feb. 13 when it opens a four-match stand against conference opponents facing Utah on Mar. 24. In the midst of its longest roadtrip of
the season, Utah returned
from California 2-3 and ready to travel to Las Vegas where the Utes will
meet UNLV and SDSU in
conference action.
