UNLV's Malec and SDSU's Waske Selected McLeodUSA Mtn. West Tennis Players of the Week
Both earn third weekly nod this season. (3/22)

Colorado Springs, Colo. UNLV senior Katarina Malec (Warsaw, Poland) and SDSU Senior Alex Waske (Frankfurt, Germany) and are this week¹s McLeodUSA Mountain West Conference Women¹s and Men¹s Tennis Players of the Week, respectively. Malec, ranked No. 41 in the nation, did not lose a set in going a combined 8-0 in singles and doubles play during the week. Although UNLV posted a 2-2 record as a team, Malec claimed all four singles and doubles matches in the No. 1 position. She has won seven straight matches in both singles and doubles and improved to 14-2 in duals and 27-5 in overall singles. Her doubles record when teamed with Marianne Bakken is now 17-4 overall and 14-1 at No. 1 doubles. She started the week with a 7-6, 6-3 win over Oklahoma State¹s Maria Galoustova, then blanked Bowling Green¹s Abby Bratton 6-0, 6-0. She then defeated Tulsa¹s Monica Poveda 6-3, 6-3 and Cindy Tow from Boston College 6-0, 6-4. The highlight of her four doubles victories was a 7-6, 6-3 win over Oklahoma State¹s No. 30-ranked Galoustova and Ashleigh Dolman. Playing in the No. 1 position, Waske helped SDSU to a 4-0 record for the week as he went 3-1 in singles and 3-0 in doubles. His loss came when he retired with an ankle injury after claiming the first set 7-5 over New Mexico¹s Matt Amgwerd on March 18. He started the week with a 6-0, 6-2 win over Tyan Shupe from Texas Tech, then defeated Greg Royce of Yale 7-5, 6-2 and Central Florida¹s Grayden Moore 6-3, 6-1. In doubles, Waske teamed with Valentino Pest for a trio of wins in the top-slot. Waske is now 8-1 in singles, all at the No. 1 position, and stands 7-0 in doubles, 4-0 when playing with Pest. This is the third player of the week honor for both Malec and Waske, who is the first player to earn consecutive awards. UNLV has claimed three women¹s awards and SDSU four men¹s honors this season.
