MWC Weekly Tennis Awards UNLV's Brett Hunter and BYU's Lauren Jones earn this week's honors.
March 16, 2006 COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - UNLV's Brett Hunter and BYU's Lauren Jones have been named the Mountain West Conference Men's and Women's Tennis Players of the Week, respectively.
A junior from Ballarat, Australia, Hunter helped the Rebels to a victory over No. 58 Ball State last week, helping UNLV climb back in the rankings at No. 62. He swept Tony Epkey 6-0, 6-3 at the No. 3 spot to improve his singles record to 10-2. He also played doubles with Elliot Wronski and the duo rallied past the Epkey brothers 8-6 to clinch the doubles point for UNLV. Hunter is now 8-1 when playing with Wronski.
A junior from Mission Viejo, Calif., Jones helped the Cougars to a 3-0 record last week, including wins over No. 52 Oklahoma State, Oklahoma and New Mexico State. Playing No. 2 singles, Jones defeated Oklahoma State's Zana Masnic (6-3, 6-4), Oklahoma's Irina Lykina (6-2, 6-2) and New Mexico State's Van Beusekom (6-2, 6-2). She also teamed with Olga Boulytcheva to win three doubles matches at the No. 3 position. The No. 98 player in the country, Jones has won her last four matches in straight sets.
