March 9, 2005 COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. Benedikt Stronk and Dita Hauerlandova, both of San Diego State, have been selected the Mountain West Conference Men's and Women's Tennis Players of the Week, respectively. Stronk, a junior from Berlin, Germany, plays No. 1 singles and No. 1 doubles for SDSU. Unranked last week, he upset No. 32 Alex Vlaski of Washington, 7-6 (5), 7-6 (9). He overcame muscle cramps in the second set to give Vlaski just his second loss of the year. He also teamed with partner Armando Carrascosa to win at No. 1 doubles, 8-6. The Aztecs, which were unranked, dropped a close match to the No. 21 Huskies, 4-3.
Hauerlandova, a junior from Prague, Czech Republic, plays No. 2 singles
and No. 2 doubles for the Aztecs. She helped SDSU record three wins
last week, including victories over No. 28 Michigan, 4-3, and No. 8
Washington, 5-2. She won five of her six matches in the week, including
all three of her doubles matches with partner Alesya Vidov. She posted
a straight set win over her Michigan opponent, 6-4, 6-1, and defeated
Mugette Ahn from Washington, 3-6, 6-3 (10-0). It was the Aztecs'
first-ever win over a top-15 ranked opponent. Ranked No. 68 in the ITA
rankings last week, SDSU catapulted to No. 25 in the rankings this week
after its two big victories.
