TCU'S Emanuel Brighiu and BYU's Anastasia Surkova Named Mountain West Conference Men's and Women's Tennis Players of the Week

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - TCU's Emanuel Brighiu and BYU's Anastasia Surkova have been named the Mountain West Conference Men's and Women's Tennis Players of the Week, respectively. This marks the fifth career honor for Surkova and the first for Brighiu.

Brighiu went a combined 4-0 last week in his first collegiate action to help TCU remain unbeaten at 8-0 on the season with wins over No. 42 Texas A&M-Corpus Christi and No. 31 Texas Tech. Playing at the No. 3 singles position, the Iasi, Romania, product defeated TAMCC's Mikhail Pavlov (3-6, 6-0, 6-1) and TTU's Lenoir Ramos (6-3, 7-6(5)). In doubles action, Brighiu teamed up with fellow freshman Adrian Simon at the No. 2 slot to topple the 11th-ranked TTU duo of Michael Breler/Sinisa Markovic (8-5) and capture the crucial doubles point in the Horned Frogs' 4-3 victory over the Red Raiders. Brighiu and Simon also defeated the TAMCC pair of Laurent Montoisy/Jose Zunino (8-3).

Surkova becomes only the second women's tennis player in MWC history to earn five weekly awards after racking up a perfect 4-0 mark last week as BYU defeated No. 49 Boise State and No. 72 Texas Tech. At No. 1 singles, the Moscow, Russia, native fought to three-set victories over BSU's Pichittra Thongdach (6-4, 4-6, 6-2) and TTU's Samantha Van Der Drift (5-7, 6-3, 6-0). Surkova paired with fellow senior Jennifer Miccoli at No. 1 doubles, clinching the doubles point in the Cougars' 4-3 win vs. BSU with an 8-5 victory over the 40th-ranked duo of Thongdach/Polina Kokoulina (8-5) and also beating TTU's Van Der Drift/Kelsy Garland (8-3).
