Mountain West Announces Men's and Women's Tennis Players of the Week - Feb. 13, 2013

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - Boise State junior Andy Bettles has been named Mountain West Men's Tennis Player of the Week, while Fresno State freshman Rana Sherif Ahmed has been selected the MW Women's Tennis Player of the Week for competition from Feb. 6-11, 2013. It is the first MW weekly honor for both student-athletes this season, and the second career honor for Bettles.
Bettles, from Somerset, England, went a combined 3-1 last week as the No. 38 Broncos defeated No. 44 Minnesota, 4-3, on Feb. 9 and lost to No. 35 Louisville, 4-1, on Feb. 10. Bettles, ranked No. 28 nationally, won both of his No. 1 singles matches. He topped Minnesota's Leandro Toledo (ranked No. 63) in straight sets, 6-4, 6-2, and also took down Louisville's Sebastian Stiefelmeyer (ranked No. 82) 6-1, 6-3. In No. 1 doubles play, Bettles and partner Nathan Sereke turned back Minnesota's No. 24-ranked duo of Rok Bonin and Mathieu Froment, 8-5. Bettles and Sereke fell to Louisville's Albert Wagner and Alex Gornet, 8-4.
Ahmed, from Cairo, Egypt, went a perfect 4-0 over the weekend as the No. 56 Bulldogs downed San Francisco, 6-1, on Feb. 9 and Santa Clara, 4-3, on Feb. 10. Ahmed teamed with senior Melissa McQueen at No. 2 doubles and the duo won both matches; 8-2 over San Francisco's Yurie Hashiquchi and Milica Hadzi-Tanovic, and 8-4 versus Santa Clara's Maggie McGeorge and Kelly Lamble. In No. 2 singles play, she recorded her first career dual match victory as she set down Sofia Holmberg of San Francisco in three sets, 3-6, 6-3, 1-0 (10-8). Ahmed's 3-6, 6-4, 6-1 victory over Lamble clinched the deciding point in Fresno State's 4-3 win against Santa Clara.
