Feb. 13, 2001
Colorado Springs, Colo. - San Diego State University sophomore Oliver Maiberger and Air Force Academy freshman Laura Nigro have been selected Mountain West Conference Men's and Women's Tennis Players of the Week, respectively. Despite a 5-2 loss to No. 1 ranked Stanford Feb. 10, Maiberger contributed to the Aztecs two points by winning his singles and doubles matches this past weekend. In doing so, Maiberger had to knock off defending national champion Alex Kim in the No. 1 position. The Lorsch, Germany, native won the second and third games to beat Kim, 4-6, 6-3, 6-1. With the win, Maiberger improved to 5-1 in dual match play this season and snapped a 17-match winning streak for Kim. In doubles play, Maiberger and partner Travis Hasson once again upset Stanford, winning the match 9-8. Maiberger earned Tennis Player of the Week honors for the second time this season.
Nigro made a clean sweep this weekend, winning two singles matches and two
doubles matches against Southern Colorado and the University of Denver on Feb.
10. Against Southern Colorado, she swept in the No. 4 slot 6-1, 6-1 in singles
play. In doubles play, she and teammate Gina Black won in the No. 3 position
8-1. Later that day, the Lincoln, Neb., native proved instrumental in the
Falcons 5-2 victory by overcoming a 3-1 deficit to win the singles match in
the No. 3 spot, 7-6, 0-6, 6-3. She and Black then again defeated their doubles
opponent by winning the match 8-6. Nigro won Tennis Player of the Week honors
for the first time in her career.
