Athlete of the Week:

Tom DeAngelis * Sr. * Air Force Academy
Air Force Academy senior Tom DeAngelis is the Mountain West Conference Men's Tennis Player of the Week. A native of Meridian, Idaho, DeAngelis helped keep the match close although the Falcons suffered their first dual-match loss of the season, 4-3, at Colorado in their only action of the week. AFA is now 7-1 in dual matches.

DeAngelis claimed a straight-set (6-2, 6-4) win over Colorado's Artur Rusiecki at No.1 singles and teamed with Nolan Cooper to defeat the CU duo of Dilaj/Jovanovic, 8-6. His singles victory marks the first win by a Falcon in the No. 1 position over Colorado in three years. With the singles win, DeAngelis improved to 12-2 overall and remains undefeated, 7-0, in dual matches. He stands 7-2 in overall doubles action and is now 5-1 when paired with Cooper.

Competing in the No. 1 singles position for the first season, DeAngelis owns a 61-15 career record at Air Force, which is second among active players. His .803 win percentage ranks fifth on the Falcons' all-time list. Last season he posted a 19-7 record at No. 3 and in 1998 registered the third-best record in AFA history with a 25-4 mark in the No. 5 slot.

Mountain West Conference Men's Tennis Players of the Week: Feb. 2 - Oliver Maiberger (Fr.) SDSU, Feb. 9 - Tom DeAngelis (Sr.) AFA.

Team-by-Team Notes

Air Force saw a seven-match win streak snapped on Feb. 4, when the Falcons suffered their first loss of the season, 4-3, at Colorado. Head coach Rich Gugat is just one shy of his 600th career victory. Currently ranked fifth among active Division I coaches, Gugat owns a 599-153 slate in his 26th season. AFA opens conference play at BYU and Utah this weekend.

BYU has been idle since returning from Southern California, but opens Mtn. West Conference action hosting Air Force on Friday.

Two players from New Mexico competed in the ITA Rolex National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships from Feb. 3-6 in Dallas. Matt Amgwerd lost in the first round, then won in consolation play before withdrawing with an injury. Nic Dubey won his first round match before losing in the second. The pair also suffered a first-round loss in doubles play. The Lobos host Colorado and Pennsylvania this week.

San Diego State's duo of Oliver Maiberger and Adam Webster brought home the double title from the University of San Diego Intercollegiates The Aztecs also saw five singles players advance to the quarterfinals of the tournament. This week, SDSU plays at Santa Clara Thursday and Stanford Friday.
