Air Force's DeAngelis Earns Mtn. West Men's Tennis Player of the Week

Senior wins a pair in 4-3 dual meet loss to Colorado. (2/9)

Feb. 9, 2000

Colorado Springs, Colo. Air Force Academy senior Tom DeAngelis is the Mountain West Conference Men's Tennis Player of the Week. A native of Meridian, Idaho, DeAngelis helped keep the match close although the Falcons suffered their first dual-match loss of the season, 4-3, at Colorado in their only action of the week. AFA is now 7-1 in dual matches and just one win shy of the 600 milestone for head coach Rich Gugat, who stands fifth among active Division I coaches with a 599-133 career record in his 26th season.

DeAngelis claimed a straight-set (6-2, 6-4) win over Colorado's Artur Rusiecki at No.1 singles and teamed with Nolan Cooper to defeat the CU duo of Dilaj/Jovanovic, 8-6. His singles victory marks the first win by a Falcon in the No. 1 position over Colorado in three years. With the singles win, DeAngelis improved to 12-2 overall and remains undefeated, 7-0, in dual matches. He stands 7-2 in overall doubles action and is now 5-1 when paired with Cooper.

Competing in the No. 1 singles position for the first season, DeAngelis owns a 61-15 career record at Air Force, which is second among active players. His .803 win percentage ranks fifth on the Falcons' all-time list. Last season he posted a 19-7 record at No. 3 and in 1998 registered the third-best record in AFA history with a 25-4 mark in the No. 5 slot.
