San Diego State's Maiberger Named MWC Men's Tennis Player of the Week Junior garners honor for the first time this season.
Jan. 30, 2002 COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - San Diego State junior Oliver Maiberger has been named Mountain West Conference Men's Tennis Player of the Week. This is Maiberger's eighth career player of the week award. Maiberger, the 11th-ranked player in the nation, led the Aztecs to victories over inter-conference rivals No. 63 New Mexico and No. 69 BYU last weekend at the ITA Region VII Indoor Championship in Boise, Idaho. Against New Mexico on Jan. 25, Maiberger defeated New Mexico's Divan Coetzee at the No. 1 position in singles action in three sets (6-7, 6-4, 6-3). In doubles action, also at the No. 1 position, Maiberger and teammate Ryan Redondo beat Bart Scott and David Kowalski, 8-4. On Jan. 26 against BYU, the Lorsch, Germany native tallied a come from behind victory over Gert Vilms (3-6, 7-6, 6-4) to give the Aztecs the 4-3 win.
